When EA launched their steam wannabe a decade or so ago they wanted to give it a short and catchy name, they looked through their IP vaults and origin was what they came up with. After all, Origin Systems was acquired by EA, but isn't exactly "the same company" entirely (because the acquisition just merely makes Origin Systems an EA asset and is why EA largely gets distribution rights to games made by Origin Systems). I don't think I would be wrong in saying that they named the platform after the company (as cute as that sounds), but it's still not the same thing. At least as far as IP is concerned, Origin Systems ≠ Origin. Originally posted by CZBGR Icepick:Well, Origin Systems is/was a company, but not what was being referred to here. Well, Origin Systems is/was a company, but not what was being referred to here. I guess I'm not a typical gamer (if such a thing exists). It wasn't until much later that I realized, "hey, Origin is actually EA"! That came as a shock. I only ever knew Origin from certain games like Ultima Underworld and System Shock (where Origin Systems was "only" the publisher, LookingGlass was the developer) and later by the Origin launcher. Wikipedia again does seem to know: "EA acquired the trademark Origin when it purchased Origin Systems in 1992." So, that's settled. The company was purchased by Electronic Arts in 1992." I guess that after the takeover EA wanted to keep the "brand" Origin and named the launcher after the former company, but what do I know. And Wikipedia confirms this: "Origin Systems, Inc. If "Origin" came from "Origin Systems", then it was a company of some sorts.
